Are you prepared to care for your pets and get them to a safe place if disaster strikes??

May 7, 2019 By Sarah

PLANNING AHEAD WILL SAVE PRECIOUS TIME AND KEEP PETS SAFE!

PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE!

Have a Pet Emergency Kit ready to go! Make
sure to include a 5-7 day supply to include:

  • Wet & Dry Food – Don’t forget a can opener!
  • Bottled Water
  • Bowls
  • 2-Week Supply of Medications
  • Medical Records
  • Written list to include the name/number of
    your pets’ veterinarian, feeding routines,
    medical history, behavioral issues or
anything that may be pertinent to anyone
who needs to take care of your pet in your
    absence.
  • Pet First Aid Kit
  • Extra Collar, Leash & Identification Tag
  • Crate or sturdy carrier
  • Litter Box & Litter
  • Disposable Bags
  • Paper Towels
  • Blanket
  • Recent photos of your pet.
  • Toys & treats

PRO TIP! Have 1 photo of only your pet and have 1 photo of you with your pet to prove ownership, if necessary.

RESEARCH

Make sure you know where the pet-friendly
hotels are.

Not all evacuation shelters accept pets, so
research shelters now and keep the info in
your Emergency Kit.

Reach out to family and friends. Make
arrangements ahead of time to find out who may
be able to shelter your pet in an emergency.

MORE TIPS!

1. KNOW WHERE TO LOOK FOR YOUR PET IF THEY’RE AFRAID SO YOU CAN EVACUATE FASTER!

2. PUT A PET RESCUE DECAL ON A DOOR OR WINDOW SO FIRST RESPONDERS KNOW THAT THERE ARE PETS INSIDE!  YOU CAN ORDER A FREE PET SAFETY PACK ONLINE FROM THE ASPCA, WHICH INCLUDES THIS ALONG WITH OTHER IMPORTANT PET SAFETY INFORMATION!

3. MICROCHIP!  ACCORDING TO A 2009 STUDY PERFORMED BY OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, THE RETURN-TO-OWNER RATE FOR CATS WAS 20 TIMES HIGHER AND FOR DOGS 2.5 TIMES HIGHER FOR MICROCHIPPED PETS THAN WERE THE RATES OF RETURN FOR ALL STRAY CATS AND DOGS THAT ENTERED THE SHELTERS!
